  • Leadership at most businesses have decided it is easier to hire experienced workers rather than grow and develop the next generation workforce

Who’s going to train the juniors? We’ve been in lost-boys mode for 20 years, now, after the post-y2k shedding of mentors and documentors. Staff has been self-learning in the way some people “roll their own encryption” with similar effects. Now we have 2 generations of people living in this dark age with no mentorship to fill in blanks they can’t fill themselves.

And you’re thinking to let them go to hire more noobs. Are they going to train them from the bread line? Is your one remaining senior who knows the whys and the whats going to train anything before management cans his expensive non-coding ass?

May as well: every time we say “this is bad because it breaks these important rules and we don’t want risk” we get “lol boomer” anyway from the sparkle-junkies. But I love how you’ve taken management’s trimming of staff to brutal levels to be an us-vs-them among the staff.

  • One thing I’d really like is vehicles, although I’m sure it would be an absolute liability/insurance nightmare, not to mention the upfront and ongoing costs and such, so I totally I totally understand why it’s not a thing.

Our regional (gov-esque) insurance corporation (insure your car) also operates a car-booking service called Evo. You pay like $10/mo for the opportunity to sign out a car from street parking, and off you go. Park it anywhere again where it’s legal, and even in some places where parking isn’t typically allowed. If you don’t want to drop and relinquish it, you can choose to keep it for longer, but the clock keeps running while it’s sitting under your control.

Drive it home and drop it somewhere allowed. An army of gig people fill the tank overnight. If it’s messy or dented, you don’t take it and you report it and the last guy pays a bundle. If you take a busted car and the next guy rats on you, you’re still paying even though you didn’t do it.

    It’s a pretty tight system.

Mainly Priuses, but they have some family-vans and the odd truck, I think. Maybe it’s a competitor. Grab a van, pick up your IKEA, drop it at home, ditch and relinquish the van.

    So easy.

  • The national shitbag registry needs to be kept by whatever unions manage EMTs . These officers need to identify themselves just so their names are placed on the list and their captain can begin negotiating so that their families and home EVER get protection from fire, ambulance or cops again.

Until then, NO identified ICE member or their family gets support. Identify yourselves to distinguish yourselves or all face the same penalty. This is a targeted labour strike.

(Similarly, anyone impeding a real emergency vehicles gets on the list until a formal written apology replaces it in the file)

You do not impede real emergency vehicles just because you need to beat up and kidnap brown people.

  • I typically do NOT give 2 weeks notice.

I went from ‘camp’ jobs where you’re fired and you have until the truck or boat or plane comes to pack all the shit you can carry and leave, to secret-squirrel jobs where quitting renders you instantly from “valued human asset” to “probably a diseased criminal”.

    I have

    • given two weeks at the start of my 2-week vacation
    • given notice that the taxi arriving now is taking me to the airport to my new city and job
    • just ghosted (that was an international one)
    • came in, dropped off my stuff, catalogued it with a peer and then had the peer escort me offsite
