    Vanilla flavoring not from a vanilla orchid is more likely to be made from wood than beaver. Lignin in wood pulp can be used as a precursor and is much cheaper than beaver butts.

    If you want relatively inexpensive vanilla extract, buy a few vanilla beans and a bottle of vodka. Cut the beans to split them open and chuck them beans in the vodka. Forget about it for a year or so and then you’ll have enough vanilla extract for the next decade or three.
