What I mean is what if I started calling all Lemmy users lemmos and meant no offense, the word caught on too.
But then Lemmy users hated it. So people stop using it.
Is that a slur or not.
Theres a lot of offensive words today that have a history like that. Where they were often descriptive words and not attacking words by intent of the user.
I think power structures come into play too. Example: a plantation owner calling his slaves the n-word. Language used to dehumanize a group is always a slur.
From what I can find online, it seems like it’s unlikely that particular term was originally meant to refer to slave masters and it moreso referred to the head of household.
Just accept you were wrong, in Brazil there was a company that didn’t want to use “black Friday” because they didn’t find a source saying it wasn’t racist.
I can think of quite a few. I presume I know the three you are talking about.
Also we’re classifying slurs as words specifically used with the intent of attacking someone right.

Aren’t all slurs attacking something or someone you disagree with?

I did? I said it was a fair and that I hadn’t read it myself. I’m not sure what more you expect.
What if the dehumanizing language is used to elevate a group above you humans?
How else do we warn others about the assholes?
