In a year when Syria says it is reclaiming the breaths of its first freedom… a lump remains in the heart like no other. For Gaza, which we knew for its patience, love, and steadfastness, still faces suffering; and death in it has not yet turned its page… a siege that does not relent, and blood that flows like an unending prayer. And on the day of Syrian joy, the day a city was freed from the shadows of fear, a banner rose in Damascus to say that incomplete joy cannot be called joy… and that Arab cities, no matter how distant, are bound by a single pain, a single wound, a cause that does not betray its people. Gaza… We will not forget you, not in days of pain, nor in hours of joy. We will not forget you because the heart is there before it is here, and because our victory is not complete until you too breathe your freedom. Syria, which rose from the ashes, carried your name in its celebration… to say that we are one people, one wound, one hope: That the day may come when we all rejoice… without chains, without war, without occupation. The day when Gaza and Syria, and every Arab land, is free as befits it to be.
