When I first joined Lemmy, I opened instance list and picked the instance when the easiest sign-up: lemmy.org. Then I wrote posts and comments to nothing for a week before realising it was defederated by all major instances and nobody sees my content. Ironic: I quit Reddit over a shadowban and my whole instance appears to be shadowbanned here. Then I joined an instance with downtime spikes resembling brush bristles.
I’ve noticed quite a few top posters that are using LLMs or other software to repost news links and images, probably from Reddit, onto a bunch of specific forums. They don’t identify as bot accounts, but they are fairly easy to spot because they are posting a steady stream of posts, around 2-3 posts an hour, 24/7. No sleep periods, just constant posts, at an unnatural rate.
After many months of design, development, gathering feedback, and testing, today we’re releasing a big update with Mastodon 4.6. The headliner of this release is Collections, a way to create and share curated collections of profiles. Part of Mastodon’s work ethos is our commitment to trust and safety, so we’ve put a lot of thought and care into the design of this feature to avoid some of the pitfalls and abuse people have experienced with similar features on other platforms, while focusing on its primary goal: Helping new users discover more of the Fediverse.
Not looking to debate or stir up anything. But, I will say despite anyone’s thoughts the anti-meta fedi pact at least allowed people to have some information on where instances and people stood on federation with Threads. Some decisions were able to be made based on that information.
I think if it doesn’t exist there should be one also regarding AI, which is a polarizing topic especially on fedi. I believe similar to the Threads issue it would allow people to make somewhat informed decisions one way or the other.
Are there current lists, sites dedicated to this? If not what are you guys thoughts?
PieFed has done it once again, this time adding ‘warning’ labels for opposing ideological perspectives, well at least one; Can’t find any warnings for fascism or capitalism 🤔
Odysee has announced something interesting: they’re building the ability to watch YouTube videos directly within their platform. Their reasoning is sound—it gives users frustrated with YouTube a better interface while still letting them access the content they want.

This is a service to help communities propagate to other instances and help with discovery of communities. So far tested and working with PieFed & Lemmy Instances - I suspect it should work with Mbin, but need to test it (Any Mbin Instance volunteers?)
I was looking at the lists of instances and where they’re hosted, weighing up migrating. Part of that was to figure out which servers might be best for connectivity issues with my region. But looking at the terms of service for some of the possibilities, I noticed that they often just say something like “This instance and your use is subject to the laws of <country>”.
Ibis is a federated encyclopedia with numerous features. If you want to start a wiki for a TV series, a videogame, or an open source project then Ibis is for you! You can register on an existing instance or install it on your own server. Then you can start editing on the topic of your choice, and connect to other Ibis instances for different topics. Federation ensures that articles get mirrored across many servers, and can be read even if the original instance goes down. Ibis is written in Rust and Webassembly, fully open source to make enshittification impossible.
Looking for people running streams repository or forte to get some support. I find the projects really cool but they don’t seem to be very popular. I intend to run either of them (or some other fediverse implementation) on my Yunohost server. Mainly want to find out if they’re compatible with mobile apps and how to do basic configuration.
Publicly Run Social Media – A Solution for Europe?
TikTok, Instagram and YouTube are not neutral public spaces. Designed to maximise attention and engagement, these platforms play a major role in shaping public opinion in Europe. They amplify misinformation, polarisation and hate speech, while also encouraging patterns of use that harm mental health.
A consortium consisting of multiple interested parties including Murena, i.e. /e/ OS, iodéOS, and Volla, is working on an open source alternative to the Google Play Integrity API, which is to be offered on smartphones that are not running a Google-certified Stock ROM.
Yesterday I found Interstellar which has this feature. I assume mainly because it is not only a Lemmy app, but also a PieFed one, which has this feature in the reference frontend (AFAIK).
I’m posting on behalf of another user on Reddit,u/TasmanianHorse, who’s exploring the possibility of integrating their platform (Echo, Pinterest alternative) into the Fediverse using ActivityPub.
Telegram channels are sort of unique in that they combine broadcasting read-only messages and having a full-blown chat, like any other group chat. Is there anything similar in federated messengers?
For now I have to split up my single community into a microblog on Mastodon and a group chat in Matrix and this is super inconvenient.

I had a random idea for a potential Fediverse platform: what if someone took the idea and design of Upscrolled, but as a decentralized, federated alternative?
Ie similar to how Lemmy allows users to create instances that are federated with each other, only this Discord alternative’s instances wouldn’t federate with each other.
Recently one of the posts I made got a porn spam comment and I also saw a lot of porn spam in my instance’s communites. Also just now I got an abusive DM telling me to kill myself and accusing me of being an astroturfer.
I’ve recently made some updates to the ActivityPub Relay I maintain. This includes a regularly updated list of connected instances for monitoring their status and having an easy way to refer to instances for inquiry. I’ve also added a relay policy which states instances will be banned for featuring bigoted content or having poor admin/uptime.
join-lemmy.org regularly crawls all active Lemmy instances to keep the instance list updated. Additionally it also collects data from all Lemmy communities. The data is now publicly available in the following git repository:
Features I can think of:
- a system for stricter content moderation, especially something that would automatically delete NSFW/NSFL posts,
- no direct messaging,
- some kind of tool for moderators to efficiently review content,
- multi-layered access to an account to allow for parental control,
- time management tool that would not be based on the client, but with the session duration calculated through interactions.
Bluesky has verified the account of ICE, which was a step too far for many in the fediverse, wanting to disconnect from the bridge between the networks
On Reddit, subreddit moderators can comment as regular users by default, and only show the green *MOD* badge when they intentionally “distinguish” a comment as an official moderation response.
I maintain four main blocklists for the Fediverse. Do not import them until you’ve read everything until the “receipts” section. I encourage blocklist skeptics to read the “receipts” sections, and to treat them as lists of reported content rather than importable blocklists.

Look, I think Ghost is a really great publishing platform. But after dogfooding their Fediverse integration for six months, I’m realizing there’s still a lot missing. With their blog dormant, I’m left to wonder: is development still happening?
I’ve been thinking a lot recently about PeerTube, Loops, Bandwagon, and other platforms in the Fediverse that are geared around artists. I might get flamed for this, and you’re welcome to disagree, but I think the network is in dire need of having support for commerce.
